  • Rangers have not won any of their last three games against St Mirren

  • Celtic needed an 87th minute winner against Saints on the opening weekend

  • Recommended bet: James Tavernier anytime goalscorer

Rangers boss Russell Martin finds himself under the microscope in Glasgow's notorious goldfish bowl following the midweek mauling at the hands of Club Brugge at Ibrox.

The Light Blues have managed just one shutout in seven competitive games lately and make the short hop to Paisley on Sunday to face a St Mirren side that frustrated Celtic on the opening weekend of the season.

Team News

After the League Cup win over Alloa, Rangers showed seven changes for the midweek loss against Brugge. Jack Butland, John Souttar, Mohamed Diomande, Oliver Antman, Djeidi Gassama, and Nicolas Raskin all returned, while Jayden Meghoma debuted just 72 hours after signing on loan from Brentford.

Skipper James Tavernier was benched but should earn a recall here, while summer arrival Thelo Aasgaard got his second cameo from the bench and should be pushing for a start.

Stephen Robinson brought in Jonah Ayunga in place of Roland Idowu for the Buddies Premier Sports Cup win over Hearts last weekend. Malik Dijksteel enjoyed a cameo off the bench in extra-time and the Dutchman may remain amongst the substitutes here.

Prediction

Rangers boss Martin finds this test sandwiched between the Champions League qualifiers against Club Brugge but, after a 3-1 home reverse, his side are in a deep hole and he can ill afford another domestic setback now.

The Light Blues were outplayed by Motherwell in their season opener and needed a stoppage-time spot kick from skipper Tavernier to salvage a point against Dundee at Ibrox a fortnight ago.

They stuttered past Alloa 4-2 in the League Cup and were humbled by Brugge in midweek, trailing 0-3 in Govan before the midpoint of the first half.

Skipper Tavernier would have been bitterly disappointed to have started that game on the bench but he came on and contributed to an improved second-half showing.

The full-back has six goals and five assists in 18 Premiership appearances against St Mirren. He is the trusted penalty taker and a free kick specialist.

Saints made life extremely tough for Celtic at Parkhead on the opening weekend, denied only by an 87th-minute goal. They can push Rangers tight, too, and it could turn out that a set piece proves significant.

Tavernier is always an attacking threat and his goal tally at Rangers stands at 133. He could add to that at the SMISA Stadium.
