Premier League club immediately open talks to extend England star’s contract after The Athletic confirm Man Utd interest
Leeds United have sprung into action to extend Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s contract after learning of interest from Manchester United.
Keen to strengthen Michael Carrick’s frontline mid-season, club chiefs at Old Trafford have set their sights on a surprise move for the Leeds talisman.
United and Calvert-Lewin: What’s been said?
The Athletic revealed on Thursday that Calvert-Lewin had been shortlisted by United in the lead-up to the winter window.
It comes after numerous outlets confirmed that Benjamin Sesko would be unavailable until at least January, as he is having to undergo a period of rest following a re-aggravation of his previous shin injury.
While Carrick does often shoehorn both Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in the No.9 roles, they aren’t out-and-out centre-forwards by trade, hence reinforcements being necessary ahead of the second half of 2026/2027.
How Calvert-Lewin has been faring
It’s clear why Calvert-Lewin has been identified as an ideal option, given he has 75 Premier League goals to his name – as well as 19 assists – and has racked up a whopping 282 appearances in the English top flight.
Already this term, the 29-year-old, who made the switch to Elland Road when his Everton contract expired in the summer of 2025, has returned four goals in eight league appearances, while he also notched 14 goals and one assist in 35 games across his maiden season in white.
Of course, those same reasons have made him absolutely off-limits in the eyes of the Leeds board, not least because the interest is coming from their fiercest rivals in the form of the Red Devils.
BBC Sport’s Simon Stone has reported that the Yorkshire outfit are now working on having Calvert-Lewin agree an extension beyond his current deal, which runs until June 2028.
INEOS will have to turn their attention elsewhere on the market, and fans will argue that this issue could’ve been much more easily resolved had they planned ahead in the last window.
