Man Utd now seriously considering move for 27-y/o Premier League whiz to reinforce the attack in January
Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on a mid-season swoop for Bournemouth’s Marcus Tavernier, according to TeamTalk.
INEOS chiefs are drawing up plans for the January window, when they will look to reinforce both the full-back and left-wing departments.
Why United are keen on Tavernier
Tavernier, meanwhile, has proven he is versatile enough to occupy both positions if need be.
The 27-year-old does mostly play his football on the left flank, but has been deployed across the frontline and in defence, which will undoubtedly be what’s attracting United to him – that and his Premier League experience.
He has racked up 125 top-flight appearances across his stint with the Cherries, scoring 28 goals and contributing 18 assists.
This term, Tavernier has already found the back of the net five times across the opening nine gameweeks.
What’s being said about Tavernier?
One factor that will go in Bournemouth’s favour is that they have him tied down to a deal until June 2029.
The Leeds-born star signed an extension last September to ensure his long-term future is secure at the Vitality Stadium, meaning Bournemouth could set as high a fee as they like if suitors come knocking in the winter.
Alternatively, they may rule out a January move entirely, especially because of how integral Tavernier is to Marco Rose’s project.
“TEAMtalk understands that Jason Wilcox has tasked the recruitment department with continuing its work on potential targets, with Tavernier among the players being assessed,” penned the outlet.
“Newcastle [United] are another club keeping tabs on developments. The Magpies have admired Tavernier for some time, with the family connection adding another point of interest: his brother, James, previously starred for the club.”
