Manchester City slipped to defeat at home on Saturday evening, beaten 1-0 by Brighton in front of their own fans at the Etihad Stadium in the ninth round of the Premier League.

Yasin Ayari, the Sweden international of Tunisian descent, settled it inside 11 minutes with the game's only goal.

City's players spent 90 minutes battering away at a Brighton defence that simply would not crack. It was a second straight Premier League loss for the Citizens.

For Brighton, it tasted sweet. Only last Wednesday, City had dumped them out of the EFL Cup 4-3 on penalties.

Frozen on 21 points at the top, City now face the threat of losing first place to an Arsenal side level with them.

Brighton climb to 19 points and third in the table.
