“Week by week” – Alonso’s update on Chelsea star’s injury makes it sound worse than assumed
Reece James has picked up an injury, and Xabi Alonso gave some more information about that while speaking post game.
Chelsea romped to a 5-1 win over Bournemouth today, and it was largely a very positive afternoon.
A lot of injured players were able to return and team looked just as dangerous in attack as they had before the extended international break. After a run of four games without a win, it was vital to get one at home, and Chelsea did it with some serious verve. Fans went home very happy.
Alonso explains James absence
It wasn’t all good news today however – Reece James wasn’t in the squad for this afternoon’s game, and it was revealed that the full back had picked up a knee injury in training yesterday.
Speaking to the press after the game, Xabi Alonso gave a bit more detail:
“He felt something [in training], but after we did the tests later in the afternoon he had some little issues on the knee, so we need to check how long it will be,” Alonso said.
“We will assess it week by week.”
It doesn’t sound too bad – although saying “week by week” instead of “day by day” is a little worrying. Perhaps it’s just a slight mistranslation.

Alonso also explained the status of Moises Caicedo, who finally returned to the starting XI for Chelsea today.
Jordan Henderson ran the show against Bournemouth this afternoon, and his stats from the game were brilliant.
