‘We all want to put it right’: Man Utd player sends message to fans after confirmation Carrick will be staying put
Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for their clash away to Chelsea this Saturday afternoon.
One player is said to have told BBC Sport: “The feeling is that we all want to put it right. Players, staff, everyone.”
Michael Carrick: The state of play
The squad were booed off the pitch at Old Trafford on Sunday following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, while Carrick was applauded off and serenaded with his chant from the Stretford End faithful.
ESPN has subsequently claimed that fans showing such support for the manager has prompted INEOS to give him the chance to turn things around.
However, you’d imagine losses to Chelsea, AS Roma and Aston Villa next weekend would provide them the opportunity to make a managerial change over the November international break.
United have now gone eight games without a win, surpassing their previous record of seven winless matches under Louis van Gaal in December 2015.
Who could be brought in at Old Trafford?
In regard to the options being considered to succeed Carrick, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are the two favourites, primarily because they are free agents – although INEOS chiefs would reportedly have to pay a £3 million compensation fee to Newcastle United to appoint Howe.
Unai Emery has made it clear he’s fully committed to Aston Villa, as has Roberto De Zerbi with Brighton and Hove Albion.
Antonio Conte remains an outside candidate, presumably because the board are apprehensive over his managing style and how they could clash heads; the Italian won’t be a yes-man like they’d prefer to employ.
After all, it was Ruben Amorim’s public criticism of the hierarchy that led to his premature dismissal last January.
