Was Fleetwood Arsenal’s Most Humiliating Defeat Ever? – Opinion
It’s crazy to think that Arsenal played at a stadium called Highbury, the name of their famous former home of 93 years, yet still managed to get knocked out of the League Cup by a League Two side.
When I saw the news the next day, I couldn’t quite believe what I’d woken up to. In fact, I was a bit confused and questioned whether what I was reading was actually true.
Surely Arsenal’s Worst Humiliation in History?
This is surely Arsenal’s worst humiliation and defeat in history. We go on about losing the Champions League final on penalties, but on Tuesday night we were somehow knocked out of the English Football League Cup by a side 84 places below us.
At least PSG are one of the greatest teams in Europe and the world. We can’t say the same about Fleetwood Town. Beyond an emotional point of view, the facts highlight just how shocking this result really was.
After 90 minutes, we had needed to fight back through a Viktor Gyökeres equaliser, and after that, the rest was history, quite literally. We were beaten 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
I simply don’t know how life for Arsenal could’ve got worse. I’ll never forget when Sheffield Wednesday knocked us out of the 2015 League Cup 3-0, thinking it couldn’t get much worse than that. But obviously it can, and it was really painful to see the reality that League Two Fleetwood Town had beaten us.
I think our pride could just about accept defeat to a Championship side, but no lower…
Even more unbelievably, Fleetwood Town hadn’t even practised penalties before beating Arsenal.
Arsenal Must Respond Against Liverpool
Arsenal have no choice but to go to Anfield on Sunday and secure three points against Liverpool.
It won’t be easy, and we haven’t won there for over a decade in the Premier League, dare I say it, but the Gunners have to get their priorities right and restore faith within the Gooner fanbase.
After such a humiliating Carabao Cup exit against Fleetwood Town, the players owe the supporters a response.
The fans will be cheering them on like no other, with the intensity of the title race being turned up another notch in the forthcoming days.
