Villa defeat leaves Tottenham with record-worst start

Aston Villa claimed their first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Tottenham, despite two late Spurs goals, as the home side were booed off at full time. Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke scored late consolations, but Villa had already built a three-goal lead. Five games into the campaign, Spurs have two points and a goal difference of -6, their worst start to a Premier League season on record.

Villa took the lead in first-half added time while Micky van de Ven was receiving treatment for a cut cheek. Johan Manzambi scooped home from six yards after Boubacar Kamara’s shot was deflected. Aston Villa doubled their lead through Nicolas Jackson, who controlled a return pass from Manzambi before lifting the ball over Van de Ven and finishing right-footed. Emi Buendía added Villa’s third with a long-range effort with 10 minutes remaining. Mohammed Kudus also had a goal ruled out for offside after the break.

Boos ring out again

Zion Suzuki made a series of early saves for Villa, including a double stop from Sávio, as Spurs were unable to turn their opening pressure into a goal. Gallagher’s late strike ended Tottenham’s long wait for a Premier League goal, while van Hecke reduced the deficit with the final touch of the match.

The late goals did not alter the reaction at the final whistle, with boos heard from the Tottenham supporters. Villa were clinical after taking the lead, while Spurs remained without a league win after five matches.
