Video: with an early double, Liverpool halt the Brighton train
After 7 matches: Brighton suffer first defeat
Liverpool halted Brighton's momentum with a 2-0 win at Anfield on Sunday evening, in the eighth round of the Premier League.
Pascal Gross opened the scoring at the wrong end. A Florian Wirtz shot struck the Brighton man and deflected into the net in the 17th minute.
Alexander Isak doubled the lead four minutes later. Bradley Barcola slipped him a pass inside the box and Isak turned it home with a single touch in the 21st minute.
Brighton pressed hard after the break and dominated possession, but they never genuinely threatened the Liverpool goal. The hosts sat deep and hunted for chances on the counter.
Both sides rang the changes in the second half. The scoreline refused to budge.
Defeat ended a seven-match unbeaten run for Brighton across all competitions, a sequence of six wins and a solitary draw.
Their previous loss came on 30 August, a 4-3 reverse at Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool, meanwhile, stayed firmly on track with a fourth straight victory across all competitions: two in the Premier League and two in the Champions League.
The win lifted them to 15 points in fourth, just one behind third-placed Brighton.
