Video: Liverpool punish Brentford in eight minutes
Liverpool capitalise on the hosts' numerical disadvantage
Liverpool came from behind to snatch a precious 2-1 win at Brentford on Saturday in the seventh round of the Premier League. The hosts imploded, collecting two red cards and handing Andoni Iraola's side a route back into a thrilling contest.
Kenny Lewis-Potter broke the deadlock for Brentford in the 44th minute. Liverpool hit back after the break through Victor Munoz in the 62nd minute, before Alexander Isak struck on 70 minutes to complete the turnaround.
That result lifts Liverpool into fifth on 12 points. Brentford, meanwhile, tasted defeat for the first time this season and sit sixth with 10 points.
Everton go ahead: red card turns the tide
Keane Lewis-Potter struck first, heading home a cross in the 44th minute to put Brentford in front heading into the half-time break.
That lead came at a cost. Three minutes into stoppage time, the referee went to the monitor and sent off Yehor Yarmoliuk, leaving Brentford to see out the rest of the match with ten men.
A man down, Brentford held their shape through the opening stages of the second half. Liverpool broke through in the 62nd minute, Victor Munoz levelling things up to drag his side back into the contest.
Liverpool pile on the pressure: Isak's sting and another red card
Liverpool then turned the screw on Brentford's defence, and Alexander Isak made it count in the 70th minute. Bradley Barcola crossed into the area and Isak lashed it home with his left foot for his fifth goal of the season.
Down to ten men, Brentford kept coming. Their players surrounded the referee in the 82nd minute after Thiago hit the deck inside the area under pressure from Jaquet, but the video technology backed the original decision to wave it away.
Six minutes of added time went up at the end of normal time, handing Brentford one last route back into the game. Manager Andrews sent everyone forward in the 90th minute. A well-drilled Liverpool rearguard had other ideas.
Vitaly Janelt then picked up a second yellow in the 90+2nd minute and walked, leaving Brentford with nine. Liverpool saw out the three points from there.
