Micky van de Ven was reported back at Tottenham’s Hotspur Way training base ahead of the trip to Manchester United, an encouraging update after his wrist knock but no confirmation that he is fit or will be selected. For Spurs, the distinction between being back at training and being ready for Old Trafford is rather more useful than premature optimism about the team sheet.

The report comes as Tottenham prepare to resume Premier League football after a three-week pause. Supporters looking for a clearer picture of Van de Ven’s injury status should keep the limits of this update in mind: a sighting at Hotspur Way is not a fitness clearance.

An encouraging return, with questions still to answer

Van de Ven had returned to training alongside several teammates. He picked up a wrist knock while with the Netherlands and was forced off against Serbia after a collision with Luka Jovic; the issue was described as not serious.

That is welcome news, but it does not settle whether Van de Ven can take part against United. Training participation and match readiness are different checkpoints, and Tottenham still have to assess his fitness before Roberto De Zerbi decides whether to name him. A previous return to the squad would not, by itself, guarantee a starting place either.

The timing matters because Spurs Web also noted a separate concern over centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who sustained a foot injury while away with the Netherlands. Van de Ven being back reduces one question for Tottenham’s defensive planning; it does not answer the other, or confirm that either defender will be available.

Selection remains the next test

Tottenham are due to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, 10 October. Van de Ven’s involvement will depend on his fitness assessment and the manager’s selection decision, not simply on the fact that he has returned to Hotspur Way.

The club’s injury-management process will matter as much as the initial sighting. For now, Spurs have an encouraging update on a defender they had reason to worry about, but no confirmation that he will play or start. The final call remains to be made.
