United’s Tottenham Plans Tested by Dorgu and Mazraoui Concerns
Patrick Dorgu faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury with Denmark, leaving Manchester United with fresh uncertainty at left-back before Tottenham visit Old Trafford.
The Guardian reported on Thursday 8 October that Dorgu pulled up while representing Denmark and was among a growing list of players injured during the international break. It gave no diagnosis grade or return date, so United’s immediate concern is availability rather than a defined recovery timetable.
The timing is awkward: United host Tottenham in their first Premier League fixture after the break, with Dorgu’s absence removing one of the options identified for the left side of the defence.
United have more than one fitness concern
Noussair Mazraoui, another player the Guardian identified as a left-back option, took a knock while playing for Morocco against Lesotho. The report did not specify the nature or severity of that issue, leaving United with two players in the position requiring attention ahead of the Tottenham match.
Bruno Fernandes is also managing an injury. Portugal coach Jorge Jesus had described it as a complicated problem, and the Guardian reported that the United captain was likely to push through the pain barrier.
United’s reported concerns are part of a wider picture ahead of the return to domestic action:
| Player | Club | Reported issue | Source detail |
| Patrick Dorgu | Manchester United | Hamstring injury | Faces a spell out |
| Noussair Mazraoui | Manchester United | Knock | Sustained on Morocco duty |
| Bruno Fernandes | Manchester United | Ongoing injury | Likely to play through it |
Dorgu’s absence puts the left side under scrutiny
The immediate selection question is how United cover the left when Dorgu is unavailable, and whether Mazraoui can play after taking a knock. The Guardian’s report does not identify a replacement, so naming a likely starter would go beyond what is known.
That uncertainty matters because Dorgu is not simply another name on the international injury list: the report specifically identifies him as a United left-back option. With both he and Mazraoui carrying concerns, the club’s choices on that side could be shaped by the condition of two players rather than one.
Tottenham have their own absences for the trip. Pedro Porro missed Spain’s assignments and will not return in time for the Old Trafford fixture, while Micky van der Ven’s hand injury was not serious. Jan Paul van Hecke has a foot injury, adding to the visitors’ defensive concerns.
A bruising international break across the league
Dorgu’s injury sits within the broader toll described by the Guardian: the international programme involved four matches in 11 days, and the report said hamstring and muscle problems had been rife. Its list of affected players included Brian Brobbey, Dan Ballard, Alex Scott, Kai Havertz, Christos Tzolis, Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Jérémy Jacquet.
Wales head coach Craig Bellamy had characterised the schedule’s intensity and athletic demands as being designed for elite players. Norway coach Ståle Solbakken, meanwhile, said the demands were more severe for Champions League players who had had little time off. Those comments frame the workload debate, but do not change the practical issue facing United: Dorgu is injured, and Mazraoui’s knock still needs to be factored into preparations.
The Guardian supplied no prognosis for Dorgu beyond a spell on the sidelines, and there is no confirmed return date to plan around. United’s left-back selection for Tottenham will therefore depend both on Dorgu’s recovery and on whether Mazraoui is fit to feature.
