Troy Deeney explains why Arsenal star is in his Team of the Week
Ezri Konsa was immense for Arsenal at the weekend as he continues to make it hard for William Saliba to get his place back on the Arsenal team automatically when he is fit again. Konsa has been one of the best defenders in England over the last few seasons, and Arsenal had to add him to their squad as they believed he was ready.
After he won the Europa League last season, it was almost certain he would leave Aston Villa, so if Arsenal did not sign him, he could have moved to another top club. They acted fast and got their man, and he is now shining on their team, making it harder for Saliba to get back in the team when he is back.
Konsa’s Impact Against Everton
Against Everton at the weekend, he scored a goal and prevented the opponents from scoring with his defending as Arsenal secured an important win. He is now being hailed as one of the best performers in the Premier League over the weekend, with Troy Deeney naming him in his Team of the Week.
While pairing Konsa with James Hill at centre-back, he said on the BBC:
“We’re going to have Konsa and Hill. Both of these two are in for the same reason: they’re absolutely solid. They just do their job effectively well. No-one’s talking about them for their theatrics.
“No-one’s talking about them because they play out well from the back. They’re just proper defenders who defend. Obviously Konsa gets a goal, so he gets an extra little part for that, but Hill was celebrating making tackles because that’s what he does.”
A Real Challenge for Saliba
Deeney’s praise reflects Konsa’s growing reputation, and his performances have made him a key player for Arsenal. The defender’s consistency is what sets him apart, and his partnership with Saliba will be fascinating to watch.
Saliba’s return will create competition, but Konsa’s form means he cannot be dropped easily. The Gunners’ defensive depth is a strength, and the competition will only make the team better. The fans will be hoping both players stay fit.
Konsa’s impact has been immediate, and his goal against Everton was a bonus. The defender’s focus remains on helping Arsenal win trophies, and his contributions will be vital. The praise is deserved, and his reputation continues to grow.
