Trent Alexander-Arnold could return to boyhood club Liverpool this summer.

A reputable source from X claims that the move will depend on the Reds striking a deal with current club Real Madrid.

The Scouse fullback left the Merseyside giants at the end of his contract in 2025.

Could Trent Alexander-Arnold return to Liverpool?

We’d have to cast some serious doubt over the possibility of this transfer happening ahead of deadline day.

For starters, Liverpool simply don’t have the funds to fully bolster their forward line, potentially sign a midfielder and then pay to bring Alexander-Arnold back to L4.

The only way we could conceivably see this happening is if Los Blancos are prepared to sanction a loan for their backup right-back, with a view to the Reds playing him back into form.

Trent would solve Liverpool’s progression issues

Liverpool’s progression game has undoubtedly suffered since losing Alexander-Arnold’s unique ability to play line-breaking passes out from the backline.

There’s evidence that Jeremy Jacquet can offer this advantage from centre-back – though certainly not yet to the same standard as our former No.66.

And as far as Jeremie Frimpong is concerned? Forget about it. The Dutchman is a threat to be reckoned with as far as ball progression is concerned, but he also lacks Trent’s superpower.

Liverpool focusing on bringing pace and width back to the side

The pursuit of Bradley Barcola and targets like Yankuba Minteh at Brighton indicate that pace and creativity on the flanks are a clear priority for Liverpool moving forward.

Beyond that, the Reds seem intent on enforcing a double pivot system where the burden of build-up and protecting the backline is uniquely balanced between the deepest midfield two (while there’s also an understanding of the wider systematic demands on the team to contribute in plugging gaps).

In terms of ball progression, there’s still an emphasis on the backline punching through lines (as we’ve seen from Jacquet against Newcastle), but there’s freedom for players to be carriers if a passing lane isn’t open.
