The agent of Tottenham goalkeeper Giglielmo Vicario has admitted that this season could be his last with the north London side.
The 29-year-old moved to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2023, joining from Italian outfit Empoli as a replacement for Hugo Lloris.
Vicario started off well in north London, and was instrumental in the Europa League success under Ange Postecoglou.
However, the Italy international has come in for criticism for his recent performances and was booed by some quarters of the fanbase for a costly error in Spurs’ recent 2-1 loss to Fulham.
Porro and Frank criticise fans
Teammate Pedro Porro called out those who did boo the goalkeeper, posting on social media following the narrow defeat to the Whites: “Football is emotions. In football, as in life, there can always be mistakes, what I will not tolerate is hearing disrespect from the fan to my team-mates – hence my frustration at the end of the game.
“And we will get up, we remind you six months ago, everything was so bad, and in the end it is not how it begins but how it ends. To the true Spurs fan, I love you.”
Head coach Thomas Frank also criticised supporters for their behaviour towards Vicario, telling Sky Sports after the game against Fulham: “I didn’t like that our fans booed at him [Vicario] straight after and a few times he touched the ball. They can’t be true Tottenham fans because everyone supports each other when you are on the pitch.
“And we do everything we can to perform. After, fair enough, boo, no problem. But not during. That’s unacceptable in my opinion.”
Vicario, though, adopted a different mindset telling Sky Sports: “It’s part of football. I’m a big man and older. We can’t be influenced by the situation in the stands. The fans have the right to do what they think. It’s on us to stay calm.
“We have to focus on ourselves. We are lacking in a little bit of composure and calmness at the moment. Today is a bad defeat and tough to accept.”
Vicario wanted by Serie A powerhouse
A report from Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport suggests the Tottenham star has informed his agents that this could be his last season at the club.
“Vicario is tired of experiencing yet another psycho-dramatic season and has let his representatives know that this could be his last agonising season in the Premier League. The yearning for home prevails, the desire to return to Serie A for good,” the report outlines.
Separate reports in Italy suggest that Inter are interested in Vicario as a potential replacement for Yann Sommer.
The Swiss shotstopper is out of contract in the summer and is expected to leave the Serie A powerhouse once his deal ends.
Inter have also been linked with a January move for Aston Villa number one Emiliano Martinez as they consider their goalkeeping options.
Spurs looking to return to winning way after 2-2 draw at Newcastle
Vicario is expected to keep his spot between the sticks for Spurs this weekend as they gear up for the welcome of Frank’s former side Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
Spurs showed impressive resolve to twice come from behind at Newcastle on Tuesday night as the pair played out a 2-2 draw at St. James’ Park.
Bruno Guimaraes fired the Magpies in front midway through the second half but Cristian Romero headed Spurs level in the 78th minute.
Anthony Gordon restored Newcastle’s lead with four minutes of normal time to play after Rodrigo Bentancur was adjudged to have fouled Dan Burn in the box.
Romero, though, scored his and Spurs’ second in second half injury time to ensure the spoils were shared in midweek.
The four-goal thriller does, however, mean Spurs have won only one of their last seven league matches as pressure continues to mount on Frank.
