Tottenham are set to be without midfielder Lucas Bergvall for a lengthy period after the Swede sustained an ankle injury in Tuesday’s Champions League 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, reports The Athletic.
Bergvall started the home victory over the German side, but was replaced by teenager Jun'ai Byfield on the hour mark.
Bergvall's injury woes
“It was a contact (injury), and they are assessing him now, so we will know more on Thursday,” Spurs boss Thomas Frank told TNT Sports following the win.
Bergvall has endured an injury hit campaign and has started just 10 league games for the north London side as a result.
And the youngster is now set for another spell on the sidelines.
Midfielder's absence a blow for Spurs
The issue comes as a blow for Spurs, who are already without a number of central midfielders due to injury.
Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha are presently sidelined, while Pape Sarr will need a period to readjust to Premier League football following Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations success.
Sarr was also struggling due to illness while with the Senegal national team.
James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Mohammed Kudus are long-term absentees for Frank’s side.
Spurs return to league duties this weekend as they look to build upon the midweek win over Dortmund, a victory that boosted their hopes of securing automatic progression to the last-16 of the Champions League.
Frank remains under pressure despite Dortmund win
Tuesday’s triumph also eased the pressure marginally on head coach Frank after fans demanded the club sack the Dane following Saturday’s 2-1 loss to West Ham.
Both Yves Bissouma and January signing Conor Gallagher featured in the home defeat to the Hammers and are expected to make the matchday squad for Saturday’s game at Burnley.
The pair, along with defender Radu Dragusin and forward Mathys Tel, were ineligible to face Dortmund in the Champions League, and will be unable to feature against Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany next Wednesday.
