Tielemans’ Leeds Display Gives Carrick More to Weigh
Youri Tielemans broke down the right and supplied the pass Bryan Mbeumo turned into Manchester United’s opener against Leeds, adding three key passes and four duels won to a display that sharpens Michael Carrick’s midfield selection question.
United were held to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road, leaving them with one league win in seven. The Peoples Person highlighted Tielemans’ contribution in a more advanced role, where his creativity offered Carrick a clear positive amid growing pressure on the manager.
Tielemans made his attacking position count
Tielemans featured higher up the pitch with Carlos Baleba starting alongside Andrey Santos, a midfield arrangement used in each of the last two matches, according to The Peoples Person. He made the most of the opportunity in the 35th minute, advancing down the right before delivering the precise pass Mbeumo finished to put United ahead.
Leeds drew level after the break through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and neither side found a winner. Tielemans continued for 84 minutes before making way for Matheus Cunha, one of the attacking changes Carrick introduced as he pursued a late goal.
The numbers show more than one decisive pass
The assist was the headline contribution, but Tielemans also created two big chances and completed two of his three crosses. He attempted 28 passes and completed 22, while his three key passes show that the opener was not his only meaningful contribution to United’s attacking play.
| Minutes | Assists | Key passes | Duels won |
| 84 | 1 | 3 | 4 |
His 78.6 per cent pass accuracy came alongside a blocked shot and defensive work: one interception and three clearances. Tielemans contested nine duels, winning two in the air and two on the ground. He did not put a shot on target, so the performance was about providing and competing rather than adding a goal threat of his own.
A selection option, not a settled answer
That is a useful argument for retaining the arrangement, but one assist does not settle the selection debate. United’s league form leaves little room for a draw to be treated as enough, and Carrick needs the midfield to help turn promising attacking moments into wins. The midfield roles of Tielemans and Andrey Santos are part of the wider selection picture, while Baleba’s place in the midfield mix adds another decision for the manager to balance.
Carrick also brought on Mason Mount and Cunha in search of a winner, but United could not find one. His next choice is whether to keep Tielemans in the advanced position with Baleba and Santos supporting him, or adjust the setup again; the Belgian’s two-match run in the role has now produced a substantial individual contribution at Elland Road.
