Three Italian giants vying for Man Utd star amid contract uncertainty
Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot is being linked with a potential return to Italy, especially if he doesn’t renew his contract in the coming months.
The 27-year-old is one of the club’s longest-serving players, having joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2018, completing a £20 million move from Porto.
The Portuguese struggled for playing time in his early days at Old Trafford, so he was sent out on loan to AC Milan for the 2020/21 season.
Dalot attracts interest from Juventus, Inter & Milan
After finding some success at San Siro, Dalot was happy to extend his spell with the Rossoneri. However, the two clubs couldn’t find an agreement, so the right-back returned to Carrington.
Dalot then gradually cemented himself as a regular starter at Man Utd. He has been the club’s first choice on the right side since Erik ten Hag’s reign.
| Dalot’s Stats by Club | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester United | 256 | 10 | 20 |
| AC Milan (loan) | 33 | 2 | 3 |
| FC Porto | 8 | 0 | 3 |
| Total | 297 | 12 | 26 |
But with his contract expiring in June 2028 and no signs of a renewal just yet, the player’s future is engulfed in uncertainty.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Fabiana Della Valle, Juventus, Inter, and Milan have all enquired about the Portuguese international.
The pink newspaper believes that a return to Serie A could become a concrete possibility if MUFC don’t offer the player a new contract in the next few months.
Milan could have the advantage due to his previous stint at the club. The Rossoneri would also give him the chance to reunite with Ruben Amorim, at least if the latter stays in his position next season.
What should Man Utd do with Diogo Dalot?
Like the rest of the Man Utd squad, Dalot has had some difficult moments over the past few weeks. The Braga native was particularly poor in the defeat to 10-man Manchester City before the international break.
However, some stats suggest Dalot deserves more plaudits than he’s receiving. For instance, he created more chances (14) than any other defender in the Premier League this season.
Ideally, United should upgrade their entire backline in 2027, including the right-back role. That being said, Dalot could be suited for a back-up role thanks to his growing importance in the locker room, his willingness to leave it all on the pitch, and his ability to play on either flank.
