What Southampton would be buying

Strip away the headline and the story is simple. TEAMtalk say Southampton are keeping tabs on Nmecha, and Football Insider add that Leeds would sell only after agreeing a deal for another striker. Sports Mole carried both reports on the 22nd October.

Nmecha arrived at Leeds on a free transfer from Wolfsburg, and his deal expires at the end of this season. TEAMtalk reported in September that Leeds were in no rush to offer a new one, and that he was effectively playing for his future. He reportedly wants assurances about a first-team role before committing.

That is a useful position for a buying club. A forward who might leave for nothing in the summer is a forward Leeds may prefer to cash in on in January, and Southampton could be at the front of the queue.

Kelan Sarson described Nmecha as a possible Shane Long style signing for Eckert. No one inside Staplewood has said that Nmecha is a target, so the comparison is Sarson's alone.

The need for another striker is visible, though. Cyle Larin leads Southampton's scorers with seven goals. He missed the West Ham win, and Saints Marching reported recurring injury issues. Lewis Dobbin scored his first Saints goal in London, and Divin Mubama has played only 145 minutes this season.

Leeds, Köln and Wrexham

The potential hurdles are easy to list. Leeds' only other striker, according to TEAMtalk, is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, so their owners are unlikely to approve a sale without cover. Julian Hall of New York Red Bulls has been named as a target but even if that signing comes off, Leeds would be foolish to go into 2027 with only two recognised strikers.

Then there is the competition. FC Köln have reportedly identified Nmecha as a January target, and Sports Mole say Wrexham are also interested. Whether he would drop from the Premier League to the Championship rather than go back to Germany is a fair question.

Wrexham beat Southampton 2-1 last month, so Saints know what a well-backed rival can do to their promotion plans.

Southampton's own route is easier to read. If January does not work, a player out of contract in the summer is available for wages and a signing-on fee, and Saints Marching have already suggested a free-agent route for another Larin style gem.

January or summer, the logic holds. If Southampton want a striker who can start, Nmecha fits the brief on paper. Whether Leeds, Köln and the player agree is another matter, and for now the only certainty is that Eckert is looking for options.
