‘There will be ups and downs’ – Jaissle on Newcastle’s recent struggles following defeat to Aston Villa
Matthias Jaissle accepts Newcastle United are going through a difficult spell after their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa, but insists the club’s young squad can learn quickly from their mistakes.
Newcastle have endured an inconsistent start under Jaissle but the German says he expected there to be ups and downs after a summer of significant change at the club.
“I think it’s always the reality check you need to do after a couple of months, especially when you have such a transition phase like we had now behind us,” Jaissle said.
“We all talked already about it, there will be ups and downs. At the moment there is a down.
“This is not for discussion, that’s clear.”
Jaissle felt there were signs of improvement between the boxes against Villa, but was frustrated by mistakes at both ends of the pitch.
“It was again for us a step in the right direction between the boxes,” he said.
“But there is huge potential and we need to improve fast.
“We need to learn fast how to defend in the box, clinical, clear clinical without doing such an easy mistake.
“Giving Aston Villa today a gift and on the opposition half to again be more efficient.”
The Newcastle boss added that his side had chances to take something from the game but failed to make enough of them.
“If there are occasions, and today there were occasions, even though we can improve in the final third, but these occasions who were there need to be used much more clinically,” he said.
Jaissle also pointed to the scale of the rebuild at St James’ Park, with several established players having left and younger talents being brought in.
“That was something we were all aware of,” he said.
“I think not only we as a coaching team when we joined and the first big names left the club, afterwards also big names left the club.
“That was something we knew that this would come.
“We also knew with that journey and with that brave approach to sign young talents that it would be even more challenging.
“But this is not an excuse.
“As soon as we understand that the young lads can learn fast and they have the huge potential, then it’s going to be a successful journey.”
