One Liverpool star looks like his time is up. The player all but confirmed that with his performance on Wednesday.

Liverpool will naturally have some major decisions to make in 2027 as they continue their rebuild. In fact, there will be surprisingly many decisions, especially with a new sporting director in charge of things.

Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, for instance - are they getting new contracts? We're really not sure as things stand and the Reds will have to find an answer to that one.

Rio Ngumoha needs a new deal, too, while Alexis Mac Allister has been open about wanting to sign a contract with Liverpool. Whether they actually get around to offering him one is another matter.

Neither of those are outright expiries in 2027, however. They'll simply enter the final year of their deals and necessitate either selling or renewing, we imagine. But there is one more contract expiry that looks ripe for a decision.

Kostas Tsimikas's contract situation

Kostas Tsimikas was something of a surprise return in the summer. Liverpool tried to sell him in 2025 but couldn’t find a buyer that the player agreed on. Instead, he went off on loan to AS Roma and endured a difficult season.

Andy Robertson’s summer departure opened up a spot at left-back, though, and Liverpool wrestle happy for Tsimikas to take that backup role rather than sign someone new. However, his contract will expire next year.

We feel it’s virtually impossible that he signs an extension, though.

Tsimkas played the full 90 minutes against Chelsea on Wednesday in the EFL Cup but never found his groove. The Blues were able to attack space around him consistently - as shown by him bring straight dribbled past twice without actually winning a tackle on the day.

His crossing was off, too. Only three of his 12 attempts found a red shirt, while his penalty miss extended the shoot-out beyond five rounds.

It was simply a poor night but one in which Tsimikas had to prove himself as an adequate backup to Milos Kerkez. In fact, he likely has to show more than that as Liverpool aren’t 100 per cent set on Kerkez as their long-term option.

That arguably works against Tsimikas. Liverpool won’t just want a pure backup but someone who could potentially rival and overhaul Kerkez for the role. Wednesday showed that the Greek won’t do that - he just isn’t consistent enough game to game.

Couple that with being over 30 and there’s essentially zero chance that Liverpool renew Tsimikas’s contract next year.
