Surprise €10m deal tabled for Liverpool veteran
Liverpool have a lot of decisions that they need to make on their squad over the next few months.
A handful of their first-team squad all have their contracts expiring in June 2027 and, with no negotiations lined up for any of them, another massive overhaul could be just around the corner.
Of course, the number of transfers that Liverpool have been linked with is obscene but, at least it proves that the Reds are casting their net far and wide for their next transfers.
Some positions are obviously more in need of reinforcement than others but, since Liverpool could end up moving some of their own players on as well, nobody actually knows what the next year or so could look like for the Anfield outfit.
That is, especially when multi-million deals are put up for grabs.
AC Milan want to offer Virgil van Dijk €10 million per year to join them from Liverpool
Virgil van Dijk has easily been one of Liverpool's best players ever since he joined.
No matter who he's been partnered with or who the Reds have faced, the Dutchman has always managed to come out as one of the stand-out performers.
Indeed, things have gone a bit wrong for him every now and then but, more often than not, he's proven why he's one of the world's best centre-backs.
However, now that he's 35 years old, questions are being asked about how long he can keep these performance levels up for.
Liverpool have already started to line up players such as Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet to replace him but, right now, Andoni Iraola's men would be lost without their captain in the starting XI.
So, that's why the latest update from MilanNews24 is so surprising.
"According to what MilanNews24 has learned, Cardinale would like to make a concrete attempt," they wrote.
"It's not just a tempting idea or a name linked to AC Milan to fuel the fans' ambitions: the Rossoneri owner is reportedly willing to seriously evaluate the conditions for bringing the Dutchman to Italy.
"To land Van Dijk, there are two key conditions. The first concerns Champions League qualification , a crucial element in presenting the defender with an ambitious and competitive sporting project.
"The second is naturally economic: a two-year contract worth 8-10 million euros per season would be on the table .
"A significant figure, which testifies to the scope of the investment envisioned by Cardinale.
"AC Milan is therefore dreaming of an international signing for the summer of 2027. Van Dijk would be a signing capable of bringing experience, leadership, and personality. Now they need to turn that dream into a concrete possibility."
Virgil van Dijk is still one of Liverpool's most important players
As mentioned, Van Dijk is key to the way that Liverpool play at the moment.
When he's left on the bench for a cup tie or a less important game, the difference in quality is staggering.
The Dutchman may not seem like he does all that much when he's on the pitch but, in reality, he's the glue that holds the team together.
Of course, other players such as Ronald Araujo or Joe Gomez can try and plug the gap left by the Dutchman but, neither of them are anywhere near his level.
It was always going to be a worry that Van Dijk would leave for free at the end of this season but, the fact that a concrete bid is about to come from AC Milan is surprising.
Most reports that emerge from Italy make it clear that most Serie A clubs are skint with several outfits often linked with haggling Liverpool for a discount on Federico Chiesa's impending transfer.
So, the fact that AC Milan are willing to give Van Dijk around €10 million per year is shocking.
His stature and name in the game will obviously carry a lot of weight but, unless you're a team who knows you can afford his wages such as Liverpool, it feels a tad strange for him to be targeted by anyone else.
