Peter Schmeichel has questioned Manchester United's decision to sell 'goal machine' Rasmus Hojlund and believes the club had bigger priorities when changing centre-forwards in 2025.

Manchester United allowed Hojlund to join Napoli on a season-long loan deal last summer, a move that was made permanent for £38m in 2026.

The Denmark international scored 26 goals in 95 games for United, but was deemed surplus to requirements after a difficult second season. Hojlund's replacement, Benjamin Sesko, has struggled with injuries and is yet to start a Premier League game this season.

Schmeichel has questioned the recruitment decisions at Old Trafford, and believes United allowed Hojlund to leave too soon.

He said his compatriot will 'score a lot of goals' wherever he plays and believes United should have focused on other areas of the pitch. Hojlund has scored 18 goals in 55 games since moving to Serie A.

"I keep talking about this. Rasmus Hojlund was a goal machine. He will be a goal machine everywhere he goes," Schmeichel told The Overlap Daily.

"Yes, he'll have periods where he doesn't score, but he will score a lot of goals. He's young, from childhood a Manchester United fan. He would do anything for this football club. He actually scored quite a few goals but he played in a period where he had no service.

"He had players there that would very openly not even pass it to him. A young kid, who needed to be coached in order to maximise his great talent. Which I think he is. I see him playing for Denmark, fantastic player.

"What did we do? Well we get Head of Recruitment in from Red Bull and what does he do? He brings in his player and sells him. So you've got Benjamin Sesko, who's a great player, but he doesn't play. He's injured all the time.

"Why did we go two years down the road with a striker who has so much potential, why all of a sudden did we feel the need to make a change there? Why did we not look at the back? And say, okay, now we've got a really good, young, talented goalkeeper [Senne Lammens], now the next thing we're going to do is build a solid foundation."
