Premier League Gameweek 8 KMI Panel Findings: Tottenham Hard Done By in Win Over Chelsea

The Premier League Key Match Incident Panel has published their findings following gameweek eight of the season. The KMI Panel reviews critical refereeing decisions, including goals, red cards and penalties.
And as is the custom, their findings have been revealed 10 days after the conclusion of the eighth round of 2026/27 league matches.
Spurs twice wronged in win over Chelsea
This time around, the key final decisions didn’t have a bearing on the final result, though Tottenham Hotspur fans will have felt wronged in their 2-0 win over London rivals Chelsea.
The victory marked just the second time Spurs have beaten their rivals at Stamford Bridge since the 1992 inception of the Premier League as a Mike Penders own goal and a late Mathys Tel strike rounded off a fine performance.
Saying that, Spurs could have won by more after they were incorrectly denied a penalty in the 84th minute. Moises Caicedo fouled striker Dominic Solanke in the Chelsea box, yet referee Chris Kavanaugh waved away protests from the away side.
It was one of two mistakes from Kavanaugh that same evening. While he eventually sent Cole Palmer off for a second yellow, the fact of the matter is the Chelsea man should have been shown a straight red for his coming together with Mateus Fernandes in the 70th minute.
Ultimately, Spurs claimed all the spoils, but having gone the entire 2025/26 Premier League season without a penalty, fans have every right to feel aggrieved.
Villa denied first-half spotkick
The third major incident came earlier in the day as Aston Villa ended Manchester City’s 100% start to the season. A Nicolas Jackson brace was enough for Unai Emery’s side to claim a 2-1 victory after City hitman Erling Haaland had briefly headed Enzo Maresca’s side level.
The Villans, like Spurs, also didn’t score a penalty in the 2025/26 campaign, but should have had a great chance to end that run against City after Johan Manzambi was hauled down by Elliot Anderson in the box.
Referee Peter Bankes opted to play on, while a VAR check backed the official’s call. Again, Villa still claimed victory, but would have benefitted with greater breathing space.
Alternative Table
The alternative table takes into account the gameweek nine results, but only the adjusted results up to the gameweek eight KMI Panel findings. The alternative table will be adjusted accordingly next week when the gameweek nine findings are published.

Incorrect Decision Ledger
Arsenal continue to have the largest disadvantage in terms of decisions going against them in the Premier League this season, with three.
However, they are now joined by north London rivals Tottenham, who have had two decisions not go in their favour.
At the other end of the table, Villa finally had their first decision go against them, having previously had two go in their favour.
As such, it means they are replaced by Manchester City and Chelsea at the “top” of this table, despite respective defeats to Villa and Spurs.
