A controversial Manchester derby headlined Gameweek 4 of Premier League season – but there was plenty of intrigue up and down the division.

Manchester City edged their 199th meeting with Manchester United 1-0 on Sunday, despite going down to ten men when Phil Foden saw red on 23 minutes.

Erling Haaland’s second-half winner was highly contentious, however, after the VAR failed to highlight Enzo Fernández’s offside position – and the fact he was potentially interfering with play – to referee Michael Oliver.

Elsewhere, Arsenal reinforced their title credentials by beating Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light, though they needed a David Raya penalty save and a spot kick of their own to beat Régis Le Bris’ stubborn outfit.

But things were somewhat less exhilarating at Anfield and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as Liverpool and Spurs laboured to 0-0 draws against Fulham and Everton, respectively.

Fortunately, those games were outliers this weekend, with Ipswich Town winning a 3-2 thriller at Crystal Palace and Brighton thumping ten-man Coventry City 5-0 on Sunday.

Not to be outdone, Leeds United wrapped an exciting set of matches by blitzing Newcastle United 4-1 on home soil last night.

There is plenty of offensive action to review, then, as we break down at all the key attacking stats from Gameweek 4…

Premier League Top Goalscorers: Belloumi and Schade at the double

Two players registered braces on Saturday afternoon, with Mohamed Belloumi and Kevin Schade delivering the goods for their clubs.

Belloumi struck twice in Hull City’s credible 2-2 away draw at Chelsea, meaning the Tigers remain unbeaten after four Premier League outings.

That’s also true of Brentford, who have won one and drawn three matches after Schade’s double cancelled out goals from Bournemouth’s Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier at the Vitality Stadium (2-2).

Special mention should go to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who scored once in Leeds’ 4-1 win against Newcastle – but whose header deflected off Jayden Bogle for the Whites’ second, denying him a deserved brace.

A pair of super subs had huge impacts, too. Zian Flemming opening his Ipswich Town account to beat Crystal Palace in the 90th minute (2-3), while Igor Jesus produced a late winner for Nottingham Forest at Aston Villa (1-2).

Premier League Most Shots: Forest’s Delap rewarded for perseverance

Talking of Nottingham Forest, Oliver Glasner’s outfit certainly weren’t shot-shy this weekend.

No player had more efforts at goal than the Reds’ Liam Delap (6) – and he was rewarded for his perseverance by scoring with his only shot on target.

Dan Ndoye perhaps didn’t get what he deserved, though. He was one of three Premier League stars who attempted five shots each, but wasn’t able to add to his solitary goal this season.

The other players to reach that figure were Rayan (Bournemouth) and Thierno Barry (Everton), but neither attacker was able to hit the target more than once.

Seven further players registered tallies of four apiece, including goalscorers Calvert-Lewin (Leeds), Tavernier (Bournemouth), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Yasin Ayari (Brighton) and Anan Khalaili (Crystal Palace).

Josh King (Fulham) and Nordi Mukiele (Sunderland) will hope for better luck next time after failing to join that quintet on the scoresheet.

Premier League Most Shots On Target: Kluivert and Bogle deliver clinical displays

Nobody managed more than three shots on target during Gameweek 4, though two players were able to get 100% of their efforts on target.

They were Bournemouth’s Kluivert and Leeds’ Bogle, who each managed three from three.

Both scored goals as a result, though there will be frustration on the South Coast that the Cherries are still waiting on Marco Rose’s first league win – despite their attacking potency.

Arsenal winger Saka was another of the weekend’s star performers, producing four shots at goal against Sunderland with three of them on target.

One of those was the penalty that wrapped up all three points for the Gunners, deep into stoppage time.

A whole host of players registered two shots on target, with the most notable being Coventry’s Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ipswich’s summer signing Flemming.

They were only on the pitch for 17 and 27 minutes, respectively, and will surely be pushing for starting berths sooner rather than later.

Premier League Highest xG: Saka scores late spot kick at Stadium of Light

With penalties representing high xG opportunities, it is unsurprising that Saka tops the expected goals chart for Gameweek 4.

He posted an xG of 1.38 after being highly involved at the Stadium of Light, hinting that he could perhaps have added an open play goal to his spot kick in Arsenal’s 2-0 win.

Some way behind the 25-year-old are Leeds’ Calvert-Lewin and Manchester City marksman Haaland, who are on 0.87 xG each.

Calvert-Lewin was a constant threat as Daniel Farke’s team demolished Newcastle (4-1) at Elland Road, while Haaland can count himself fortunate that his controversial goal against Manchester United wasn’t ruled offside.

Enzo Le Fée will be frustrated that his 0.85 xG didn’t equate to a goal for Sunderland, though Brighton’s Pascal Groß can be more satisfied with his level of efficiency.

The veteran German scored from an xG of 0.82 and also delivered a pair of assists in the Seagulls’ 5-0 rout of Coventry.

Premier League Big Chances Scored: Schade shows his class against Cherries

Brentford attacker Schade hasn’t always been the most clinical of forwards, but he looks to be adding that quality to his game this season.

The former Freiburg man has three league goals so far in 2026/27 – scoring the opener against Leeds last month before netting a brace against Bournemouth this weekend.

Notably, those two goals at the Vitality Stadium came from just two big chances, reflecting a commendable ability to seize opportunities when they are presented to him.

No other player scored two or more big chances, with 13 other scorers netting just one big chance during Gameweek 4.

However, Jesus (Nottingham Forest), Alysson (Aston Villa) and João Pedro (Chelsea) all deserve honourable mentions for scoring with their only shots in their respective matches.
