  • Sunderland have not lost at home on their return to the Premier League

  • Leeds have earned eight points from their last four matches

  • Recommended bet: Omar Alderete to score anytime

Sunderland finished 24 points behind Leeds in last season's Championship, but the Black Cats have turned the tables in the Premier League this term.

The ante-post relegation favourites enjoyed a superb run before Christmas and they kicked off the latest round of top-flight fixtures in sixth place.

However, Leeds are also on the charge after recent home wins over Chelsea and Crystal Palace and they will be aiming to spoil Sunderland's unbeaten record at the Stadium of Light.

Team news

Aji Alese is Sunderland's only confirmed injury absentee.

However, they are also missing the suspended Luke O'Nien and have six players – Noah Sadiki, Reinildo Mandava, Arthur Masuaku, Habib Diarra, Bertrand Traore and Chemsdine Talbi – away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Leeds will assess the fitness of forward Lukas Nmecha, who has a thigh injury, but midfielder Sean Longstaff and winger Daniel James remain sidelined.

The stats

Sunderland are unbeaten in eight Premier League home matches played so far this term.

Four of the Black Cats' last eight games ended in draws and four of their last six matches were goalless at half-time.

There have been over 3.5 goals in five of Leeds' last seven league matches and both teams have scored in the Whites' last seven Premier League matches.

Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored six goals in his last five appearances.

Prediction

Sunderland are missing six players – twice as many as any other Premier League club – due to the Africa Cup of Nations, but they should still be competitive under impressive manager Regis Le Bris.

The depleted Black Cats earned a deserved point at Brighton last weekend and they have won five and drawn three of their eight matches at the Stadium of Light.

Visitors Leeds are enjoying their best spell of the season, vindicating the decision to stick with under-pressure manager Daniel Farke.

A 3-1 home win over Chelsea was followed by a dramatic 3-3 draw with champions Liverpool at Elland Road and a 1-1 draw at Brentford.

Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his resurgence with the first two goals in last weekend's 4-1 home victory over Crystal Palace and he is among the favourites to break the deadlock on Wearside.

However, it could pay to go for a less obvious selection in the anytime goalscorer market as Sunderland centre-back Omar Alderete poses a serious threat from set-pieces.

He hit the crossbar with a thumping header against Aston Villa in September and scored the winner at Nottingham Forest later that month.

The Paraguayan scored twice during his nation's 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign and has gone close to adding to his goal tally for Sunderland recently.

Alderete had four attempts at goal in this month's games against Man City and Liverpool and forced Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen into two saves in the stalemate in Sussex.

Leeds have conceded 19 goals in eight away matches and set-pieces should be a key part of Sunderland's gameplan on Sunday.
