Vitor Pereira got off to an excellent start at Nottingham Forest as he led the club to a 3-0 win over Fenerbahce in the first leg of their Europa League knockout play-off match.

Could he back that result up when Forest face Liverpool at the City Ground this weekend? A tough ask indeed.

The Merseyside outfit have improved in recent months and they currently occupy sixth place in the Premier League table, just three points behind Manchester United in fourth.

Having progressed in the FA Cup last time out, Arne Slot will be hoping his side can notch their third consecutive victory.

Team news

Pereira will be without several players for this clash against Liverpool. Matz Sels isn’t expected back until later this month, while Nicolo Savona is out with a knee injury.

Elsewhere, long-term absentees Wily Boly, Chris Wood and John Victor still face several months on the sidelines.

Slot also has various players out longer term. Alexander Isak, Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Stefan Bajcetic are all out for the next few months.

On a more positive note, Jeremie Frimpong could be set to return by the end of this month if all goes to plan in his recovery.

The stats

Nottingham Forest were impressive 3-0 winners at Anfield in November and have won three of their seven matches against Liverpool since promotion in 2022.

Liverpool’s win here in March 2024 is their only away win over Forest in 15 previous attempts.

Forest are looking for a first league double over Liverpool since the 1962/63 campaign.

Hugo Ekitike is the top scorer this season for Liverpool, scoring 15 goals across all competitions in his debut season.

Igor Jesus, with 12 goals this term, is Nottingham Forest’s top scorer.

Both teams have scored in only one match between these clubs since the turn of the century.

Prediction

Forest certainly appear to have gotten that new manager bounce in midweek with the 3-0 win over Fenerbahce.

Can that continue this weekend? If so, it would give the club a massive boost in their relegation battle.

Slot is now targeting a top four spot in the Premier League and a victory at the City Ground would enhance that prospect.

The Reds should benefit from Forest’s European exploits in midweek and secure just their second away win over the club this century.
