Eddie Howe’s exit over the summer meant this was always going to be a season of rebuilding for Newcastle.

However, Monday’s 4-1 hammering at Leeds suggests Matthias Jaissle’s task is even bigger than expected, and he desperately needs a response against Hull.

The Tigers’ fast start back to life in the Premier League has been one of the stories of the season, though, and Sergej Jakirovic’s in-form side are not going to lie down easily in Saturday’s St James’ Park showdown.

Team news

As if the result was not bad enough, Monday’s defeat at Leeds also saw Newcastle lose Nico Gonzalez and Jacob Ramsey to injuries, with that pair joining Joelinton, Amar Dedic, Dan Burn, Ewen Jaouen, Anthony Elanga and William Osula on the sidelines.

Hull are in similarly bad health, with Nobel Mendy being the latest to join a stacked infirmary alongside Ilyas Ansah, Jack Butland, Charlie Hughes, Hidemasa Morita, Eliot Matazo and Darko Gyabi.

The stats

Hull have lost just one of their last 10 games.

Newcastle have won only six of their last 16 home matches, losing seven times.

The Magpies have gone 14 home games without a clean sheet, shipping two goals in each of this season’s three outings at St James’ Park.

The Tigers have lost only five of their last 19 away matches.

Hull are unbeaten in all three Premier League head-to-heads on Tyneside.

No team had picked up more yellow cards than the Tigers’ 13 ahead of this round of Premier League fixtures.

Prediction

Newcastle desperately need to bounce back after their Elland Road embarrassment but doing so will be made difficult by Hull, who will be in no rush to surrender their unbeaten record.

The Tigers have shown real adaptability under Jakirovic, making minor tweaks to enjoy positive results against all of Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Coventry, teams who all utilise markedly different styles.

That makes the in-form visitors hard to oppose on Tyneside, with Newcastle’s injury crisis only making their odds more unappealing.

Key to Hull’s chances will be Mohamed Belloumi, who has looked a real livewire in his first Premier League campaign. The Algerian’s point-winning brace at Stamford Bridge means he has been directly involved in three goals in four league appearances, and his tally of eight shots is the most in the Tigers squad.

Newcastle looked flat against Leeds and are sure to go on the front foot in a bid to rectify that. That tactic may only play into counter-attacking masters Hull’s hands over the course of the game but, at the very least, it should lead to shots for Yoane Wissa.

The DR Congo forward has averaged a shot every 44 minutes in this season’s Premier League and will do his best to prevent further misery for the Magpies.

Score prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Hull

Back Hull or draw double chance, Mohamed Belloumi to score or assist, Yoane Wissa over 1.5 shots at 13/2 with LiveScore Bet.
