  • Man City's Phil Foden scored twice in Wednesday's win over Borussia Dortmund and earned a recall to the England squad

  • Liverpool have lost their last three Premier League away fixtures, at Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Brentford

  • Recommended bet: Man City to win 1-0

Either Man City or Liverpool have won the Premier League in each of the past eight seasons and Sunday's clash at the Etihad Stadium is a vital fixture in the title race.

The rivals have ground to make up on leaders Arsenal but both enjoyed impressive midweek Champions League wins as City beat Borussia Dortmund 4-1 and Liverpool defeated Real Madrid 1-0 at Anfield.

However, Arne Slot's men have struggled away from home recently, losing their last three road fixtures in the league, and City are odds-on to claim their first win over Liverpool since April 2023.

Team news

Midfielder Mateo Kovacic (ankle) is Man City's only confirmed injury absentee although Rodri is a major doubt after missing the win over Borussia Dortmund. Nico Gonzalez should start in central midfield.

Liverpool hope to have Alexander Isak (groin) back in the squad but Hugo Ekitike is expected to start up front. Goalkeeper Alisson remains sidelined along with Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni and Stefan Bajcetic.

The stats

Man City have won their last six home matches by at least a two-goal margin Erling Haaland has scored in 21 of his last 24 appearances for City and Norway

The last four games between these clubs all ended with under 2.5 goals

Liverpool beat Man City 2-0 in both of last season's league meetings

The Reds have lost six of their last nine games in all competitions Three of Liverpool's four league defeats this season were by a 2-1 scoreline

Prediction

Liverpool did the double over Man City on their way to the Premier League title last season but the Reds are clear outsiders at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Arne Slot's men were excellent in Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League win over Real Madrid and they ended their four-match losing streak in the league by beating Aston Villa 2-0 at home last weekend.

But Liverpool are yet to produce a convincing performance away from Anfield in the league this term.

They let slip a 2-0 lead against 10-man Newcastle at St James' Park before Rio Ngumoha's 100th-minute winner and needed an injury-time penalty to edge past Burnley at Turf Moor.

Their last three trips ended in defeats at Crystal Palace (2-1), Chelsea (2-1) and Brentford (3-2) and a low-scoring loss could be on the cards against City.

Both clubs have had tight games against leaders Arsenal this season. Liverpool won 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a brilliant Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick in the final 10 minutes and City conceded a late goal to draw 1-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

That display showcased their defensive grit and a 1-0 City win is worth backing in the correct-score market given Liverpool's struggles away from home.

City have scored only twice in their last four meetings with the Reds but Liverpool's defence is less formidable this season and striker Erling Haaland is in sensational form for the hosts.
