Liverpool vs Burnley predictions: Reds may need to be patient

Liverpool will be aiming to make it two home wins in a week when they welcome second-bottom Burnley to Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Reds knocked a battling Barnsley side out of the FA Cup on Monday and have another very winnable assignment at home this weekend when the struggling Clarets visit Merseyside.

Scott Parker's team are on a fairly wretched run in the top flight — they are without a win in the league since October 26 — but they at least also progressed in the cup when hammering Millwall 5-1 at home last weekend and they will believe they can cause the champions some problems.

Team news

Hugo Ekitike came off the bench against Barnsley after a two-game layoff to prove his fitness, so the French striker is expected to start for the hosts this weekend.

Alexander Isak is out as he recovers from a leg fracture and Mohamed Salah is still away with Egypt at AFCON.

Wataru Endo is closing in on a return to action after missing the last seven games through injury, but Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni will miss the rest of the season.

Burnley's lengthy injury list includes Connor Roberts, Jordan Beyer, Zeki Amdouni and Josh Cullen, while Zian Flemming and Joe Worrall are both major doubts for the trip to Anfield.

Lyle Foster missed the cup win over Millwall due to illness, but is likely to be back on Saturday.

The stats

Burnley have only won one away league game this season — a 3-2 success at bottom-of-the-table Wolves.

Liverpool won the reverse fixture at Turf Moor 1-0 thanks to a late Mohamed Salah penalty.

The Reds are on an 11-game unbeaten run, winning six and drawing five times.

Burnley's 5-1 win over Millwall in the FA Cup last time out was their first victory in 13 games.

Burnley have only won once at Anfield in the last 50 years — a 1-0 victory in January 2021.

Prediction

Liverpool's season has not gone to plan so far but over the past month there have been much more positive signs suggesting Arne Slot's men are edging back closer to their best.

A deserved draw at leaders Arsenal last week was followed by a 4-1 win over the Tykes and, while the scoreline flattered them somewhat on Monday, the champions still had plenty of chances to have wrapped up the game sooner than they eventually did.

They are now unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions, winning six, and Burnley do not look capable of troubling the hosts too much.

Parker's side were impressive when claiming a 2-2 draw with a fired-up Manchester United at home recently but that sort of performance has been too few and far between in the top flight — a judgement reflected in their perilous position of 19th place, while they are still eight points adrift of safety.

Burnley are likely to be compact and get plenty of men behind the ball at Anfield in a bid to stifle a Liverpool team that have struggled against low blocks at times this season.

That could mean a tight first half which could easily end level, before the Reds eventually break down Burnley in the second period.
