  • Brighton are 12th in the Premier League

  • Liverpool are in fifth place, nine points better off than the Seagulls

  • Recommended bet: Under 2.5 goals

Liverpool's battle to finish in the Champions League spots takes them to the Amex Stadium for a Saturday lunchtime start against Brighton, who are enjoying an upturn in form.

The Reds secured their place in the quarter-finals of Europe's top competition with a 4-1 aggregate victory over Galatasaray on Wednesday and they now turn their attention to the domestic scene.

With sixth-placed Chelsea just a point behind Liverpool in fifth, Arne Slot's side know any mistakes could be punished by the teams in behind and this trip to the south coast is a potential banana skin for them.

Team news

The host could welcome back Kaoru Mitoma, who missed the victory over Sunderland last weekend because of the foot injury he sustained in the loss to Arsenal at the start of March.

Adam Webster and Stefanos Tzimas remain out for the season.

Liverpool are still without Alexander Isak, who is pencilled in for a return next month, as well as the trio of Wataru Endo, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley.

The stats

Brighton have won three of their last four matches to pull clear of relegation trouble, while seven of the Seagulls' last eight home fixtures have produced fewer than three goals.

Liverpool have won two, lost two and drawn one of their last five games and three of the Reds' last five away contests have gone under 2.5 goals.

Liverpool defeated Brighton 2-0 in the league at Anfield in December.

Prediction

Liverpool showed their class in Wednesday's 4-0 victory over Gala at Anfield, making amends for the 1-0 first-leg defeat in Turkey, but they now come up against a reinvigorated Brighton and Saturday's meeting will be tough for the Merseysiders.

The Reds have struggled on their travels and have lost two of their last three away assignments, going down to rock-bottom Wolves in the league and Galatasaray in the Champions League.

It just has not quite clicked for Slot's men away from their Anfield base, but the same can also be said of Albion when it comes to their results at the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls have won just one of their last five matches on the south coast and they have been hard to trust when backing them to win this season.

Therefore, the better play for this contest is to go with under 2.5 goals, a bet which has landed in seven of Brighton's last eight home games.

Before slotting four past Gala, Liverpool's two outings before that produced under three strikes, evidence of how their forward line has faltered at times.
