Aston Villa have emerged as unlikely title challengers after winning six Premier League matches on the bounce, a status they hope to further underline when Man Utd head to Villa Park for Sunday's sole offering from the top-flight.

After a slow start to the season, Unai Emery's side are now flying, not only taking 18 points from the last 18 available in the league, but also winning nine on the spin across all competitions and the same amount in a row on home soil.

United are also in decent form, losing just once since September, but there is still an air of unpredictability to Ruben Amorim's side, as evidenced by their 4-4 draw with Bournemouth on Monday.

Team news

Villa could be boosted by the return for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who has missed the last two games with a back injury, but defensive pair Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings remain sidelined, as does midfielder Ross Barkley.

Harvey Elliott is struggling with illness, while fellow loanee Jadon Sancho is ineligible to face his parent club.

United remain without injured defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire, while Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui have all linked up with their countries ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Red Devils will also be without midfielder Casemiro, who is serving a one-match ban after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against Bournemouth.

The stats

Aston Villa are looking to win seven top-flight matches in a row for the first time since 1990.

Villa are also eyeing a 10th victory on the spin across all competitions, a feat they have not achieved in more than 111 years.

The Villans are aiming to win 10 home matches on the bounce for the second time under Emery.

United have only lost on one of their last 26 league visits to Villa Park, although that sole defeat did come with Emery in charge of the hosts in November 2022.

The Red Devils have only lost one of their last 10 matches and have scored in six successive away fixtures.

Prediction

Villa are the Premier League's form team and will be confident of making it seven league wins on the bounce on Sunday against what looks set to be a depleted United line-up.

The Villans have won nine on the spin at Villa Park across all competitions, but dig a little deeper and that record gets even better, as they have only lost two of their last 39 matches on their own patch, with both of those defeats coming against Crystal Palace.

While Emery's side have plenty of winning momentum, they are slightly susceptible at the back, keeping just one clean sheet in their last seven across all competitions, so United should at least be confident of troubling the scoresheet.

The Red Devils are fresh from putting four past both Wolves and Bournemouth and have scored in six away games on the bounce.

Amorim's side are certainly firing going forward, but they may struggle to keep Villa at bay at the other end and this should end in a home win.
