Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed Michael Carrick as 'the right man' to take Manchester United forward, despite mounting pressure on the under-fire boss.

United's winless run was extended to nine games in all competitions on Saturday after a 2-0 Premier League defeat at Chelsea, where Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored for the West Londoners.

After the game, Carrick said he expects to remain in charge for Tuesday's Champions League clash against Roma, despite increasing pressure.

Asked by TNT Sports after the game whether he expected to be in charge for United's next match, Carrick replied simply: "Yes".

Manchester United have endured their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign, but Solskjaer has backed his former teammate to come through a tough spell.

Speaking to Forza Football, Solskjaer said he is firmly in Carrick's corner, and believes the two of them share more than people might think.

"Michael Carrick has what it takes to take Man United forward, I think he's the right man. He understands the club, understands the fans, and knows what's required. "You don't see that 'devil' in him. But it's there, and I have it too. We are so incredibly alike."

Solskjaer also revealed that he had recommended Carrick in his own conversations with the club.

"When I spoke with Man United, I also spoke highly of Michael Carrick," he said.

"I said: If you choose him, you're getting a good man."
