Muniz rescues point for Fulham against Newcastle following Murphy’s stunner
Rodrigo Muniz rescued a point for Fulham moments after Jacob Murphy had given Newcastle the lead with a stunning strike as both sides shared the points at Craven Cottage.
Murphy broke the deadlock in a game which had until that point lacked quality in front of goal, curling past Bernd Leno from outside the box on 80 minutes to spark huge celebrations in the away end.
But Fulham were level just three minutes later when substitute Muniz poked home from close range with the help of a deflection.
Newcastle had earlier had a goal controversially ruled out. Former Fulham defender Dan Burn thought he had put his side ahead against his former club just after the half-hour mark after tapping in from Jacob Murphy’s low cross.
But Yoane Wissa was adjudged to have pulled back Fulham defender Timothy Castagne before the ball arrived at Burn’s feet, leaving Newcastle feeling aggrieved.
Fulham were the joint-third lowest scorers in the Premier League this season going into the game and again struggled in front of goal, with the ineffective Gonzalo Garcia failing to make his mark.
He should have done better with a free header at the back post early on, while Oscar Bobb and Josh King also came close, forcing good saves from Lukas Hornicek.
But Harvey Barnes spurned the biggest chance of the first half when he raced through down the left and was denied by the head of Fulham goalkeeper Leno.
Lewis Hall had the best chance to win it after both sides had scored but his effort from inside the box lacked power and allowed Leno to make a straightforward save.
Ryan Sessegnon also came close when his powerful effort from distance forced Hornicek into a diving save, but neither side could find the winner they wanted.
