Moyes admits ‘surprise’ at Everton owners’ decision to seek sale
David Moyes has admitted he was surprised by The Friedkin Group’s decision to explore a potential sale of Everton less than two years after taking control of the club.
TFG completed its takeover in December 2024, succeeding Farhad Moshiri, but the group has now confirmed it is considering new investment options, including the possible sale of a controlling interest.
“I was surprised, they only came in a year and a half ago,” Moyes said.
“We all expected them to be here the next 20, 30 years.
“I truly believed with new ownership they were in for it completely with us all.”
Everton’s official statement said TFG had initially focused on stabilising the club financially while supporting the completion of the new stadium after taking ownership.
Moyes suggested the group may not yet have had the chance to fully understand the club and its supporters.
“Maybe we haven’t had the opportunity to explain to the Friedkins what we are and who we are,” he said.
“My ambition coming back was to get Everton back challenging for Europe.”
The Everton boss also revealed he only learned of the development on Friday morning.
“It’s been a difficult summer for us, I only just found out this morning like everyone,” he added.
“I love this club too much, but it’s for Evertonians I’m disappointed for, they’ve been through so many difficulties.”
Despite the latest uncertainty, Moyes insists his focus remains on matters on the pitch.
“We’re just starting to get back on the right foot,” he said.
“We’ll keep them focused on what we can do, which is win the games.
“We’re looking forward to getting the right people in.”
