Milan are monitoring Bruno Fernandes’ situation at Manchester United, with Ruben Amorim hoping for a reunion with his former captain.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Portugal midfielder’s relationship with the club has broken down, and he could push for a January exit.

Fernandes was left on the bench for United’s weekend defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford. That came after he publicly criticised the club following their 4-1 Champions League loss to Como, saying United focus too much on their past glories instead of looking to the future. Michael Carrick, who is himself under growing pressure, publicly disagreed.

Bruno Fernandes’ contract and Milan’s hurdles

Fernandes’ contract runs until June 2027, and talks over an extension have stalled. United have the option to extend his deal by a further year, which they could trigger to avoid losing him for free and secure a fee instead.

His contract also includes a release clause of almost €65m for foreign clubs, and the 32-year-old rejected lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia in the summer.

The biggest obstacle for Milan would be his salary of €10.2m net per season, well beyond what the Rossoneri can afford. Both the player and the club would need to make sacrifices for a deal to work.

Amorim knows Fernandes well from his time at Old Trafford. He believes the former Udinese and Sampdoria midfielder could thrive in one of the two attacking roles behind the striker in his 3-4-2-1 system.
