Manchester United manager Michael Carrick believes that trophies should be reassigned to runners-up if Manchester City are stripped of their titles.

Manchester City are facing unprecedented sanctions after being found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules. An independent commission has deemed City guilty of 114 breaches, relating to the period between 2009 and 2018.

City's alleged inflation of revenue figures allowed the club to spend significantly in the transfer market, building a team that won multiple Premier League titles and domestic cups.

Carrick played in the Manchester United side that finished as runners-up to City in the 2011/12 and 2017/18 Premier League seasons, and believes stripped titles should be allocated to those who finished as runners-up.

However, he admitted that any additional medals would not 'bring the feeling' of winning them on the pitch.

"I think at the moment, as it's still not finalised, I think I'll hold that one until later on," Carrick said at a press conference on Friday.

"I think regardless of anything, a medal anyway, in any sport in history, I think later on you get the medal, and it's proven at different times.

"It's the moment that you strive for to win and achieve in that moment, so the medal here or there, not getting blase about it, but that doesn't bring the feeling of when you initially win or you don't win. That's essentially what we're all in it for."
