Manchester United future in doubt as Chelsea pursue JJ Gabriel
Chelsea are reportedly the preferred English destination for Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel, though the 15-year-old’s future remains unresolved with a move to Spain still very much in play.
Chelsea emerge as the leading English club in the race
Gabriel has formally asked United to cancel his academy registration, a shock development that broke last week, and the club are continuing their efforts to change his mind. According to the Standard’s Alex Young, Chelsea are proving the most attractive English option for the teenager, with talks having reportedly taken place.
That claim is credited to TEAMtalk, who report that every elite club has pitched their plans to Gabriel at this point. Even so, the same reporting suggests a move to Spain looks more likely than staying in the Premier League, with Real Madrid and Barcelona both stepping up their interest.

They remain hopeful of keeping their academy star but are also preparing for the worst, and TEAMtalk claims the club have identified Lens teenager Mezian Mesloub as a potential alternative forward. Mesloub, still only 16, has already made his senior debut for the French club and scored just 11 seconds into that appearance against Nantes last season.
He’s attracted attention for his technical ability and willingness to take responsibility in the final third, and United face competition there too – Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are all said to be monitoring him. Brexit rules complicate any of that interest turning into an English move, since Mesloub can’t sign for a Premier League club until he turns 18. It’s a similar situation to the one Chelsea navigated when they brought in Harrison Bettoni from Wigan, where academy recruitment rules shaped the timing of the deal.
Gabriel’s own situation could become clearer once he turns 16 on October 6. His Irish passport could theoretically open the door to a move abroad, though any transfer would still need FIFA approval regardless of which country he ends up in. For now, nothing is confirmed – Chelsea’s interest is real and reportedly the strongest among Premier League clubs, but United haven’t given up, and Spain still looks the more probable exit route if Gabriel does leave Old Trafford.
