Manchester City vs Norwich City: Last 5 meetings, reviewed

Manchester City host Norwich City at the Etihad tonight for the third round of the EFL Cup as the sides renew hostilities for the first time in over four years.

Since Norwich's relegation from the Premier League at the end of 2021-22 season, City haven't played them in any competitive fixture. But given their head-to-head record, will be relishing the prospect of facing them again.

Here's how the rivals stack up in their last five official clashes:

Norwich City 0-0 Manchester City (Premier League, March 2016)

Manuel Pellegrini's farewell tour was going off the rails with a series of poor results at this point. But a 4-0 drubbing of Aston Villa in their last game was still thought to give them a pep in the step, only for Manchester City to slip up again, against a Norwich City team that had lost eight of their previous nine top-flight matches.

Norwich City 3-2 Manchester City (Premier League, September 2019)

After back-to-back Premier League triumphs with 95+ points in each, chinks began to show in City's armor. And the first crack was delivered by Norwich, who beat the two-time defending English champions 3-2 at the Carrow Road. Kenneth McLean and Todd Cantwell had put them 2-0 up before Sergio Aguero pulled one back just before the break, although Teemu Pukki restored their two-goal advantage shortly into the second half. Rodri reduced the deficit late on, but Pep Guardiola's band of busted flushes fell short of finding the elusvie equalizer.

Manchester City 5-0 Norwich City (Premier League, July 2020)

On the final matchday of the 2019-20 season, City avenged their shock loss however, with a strong 5-0 defeat of the Canaries and a resounding end to an otherwise disappointing campaign. Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne put them 2-0 up at the break, before Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and De Bruyne again, scored after the break.

Manchester City 5-0 Norwich City (Premier League, August 2021)

Back in the Premier League after another relegation, Norwich City looked set for a spell back in the Championship after starting off their 2021-22 season with heavy defeats. Liverpool beat them 3-0 before City dealt the Canaries another 5-0 drubing. Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez came back to haunt them with a goal apiece.

Norwich City 0-4 Manchester City (Premier League, February 2022)

Back in his heydays, Sterling was a force to be reckoned with and Norwich are among his favorite teams. So when the sides met again for their second league fixture of 2021-22 season, the forward bagged a hat-trick, at which point the Norfolk side were sick at the sight of him. Phil Foden was on target that day too as City extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 15 matches at this point, en route to winning the title on the final day.
