  • Manchester City have won just four of their last 12 league games against Tottenham

  • Spurs have won on two of their last four trips to the Etihad (D1, L2)

  • Recommended bet: Double chance draw/Tottenham

Manchester City's 4-0 win at Wolves was arguably the most impressive performance of the opening weekend of the new Premier League season and Pep Guardiola will hope they have put last season's struggles behind them.

They next host Tottenham, who responded to their frustrating penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup by beating Burnley 3-0 in the league.

In contrast to Ange Postecoglou, new Spurs boss Thomas Frank has altered his approach to counter both of their opponents and previously guided Brentford to a 2-1 victory at the Etihad in November 2022.

Spurs also have a peculiarly good record at the ground and could frustrate their hosts on Saturday.

Team news

City have the option of naming the same side that started the win at Molineux, with Mateo Kovacic (Achilles), Rodri (knee) and Josko Gvardiol (knock) ruled out.

Phil Foden could feature following an ankle issue but Savinho may miss out due to ongoing speculation he could join Saturday's visitors.

Frank selected a back three against PSG but switched to a back four for Burnley's visit.

The Dane is expected to add an extra player to his defence against the big teams and Kevin Danso could come in, with the Austrian's long throws potentially troublesome for City.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha should return in midfield to provide greater ballast.

The stats

Manchester City have won just four of their last 12 Premier League games against Tottenham, including last season's 4-1 defeat at the Etihad.

However, City's 26 points are the most of any Premier League side since the start of April and they are unbeaten in their last 10 games.

Erling Haaland has also scored 48 goals in 48 home Premier League appearances.

Frank's November 2022 Etihad win with Brentford means he could become only the third manager to beat Guardiola away from home with two clubs.

Prediction

City's poor 2024-25 season saw Guardiola's future questioned.

However, the Spaniard refreshed his squad in January and added more new names over the summer, with recent signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki both scoring in the win over Wolves.

Those two will be looking to make an immediate impression on the Etihad crowd but could face real opposition against a renewed Spurs side boasting more tactical flexibility than during their spell under Postecoglou.

The Australian was wedded to his attacking philosophy, but Frank is more pragmatic and often proved an awkward opponent for Guardiola while in charge of Brentford.

He will have a plan to counter City's attacking threat and could change his team's shape.

Furthermore, Richarlison, who scored twice against Burnley, looks renewed and provides a threat on the break that can keep Tottenham in the game and help them get something from Eastlands.
