Manchester City might have found their long-term answer in goal as Pierce Charles thrives at QPR
Despite his recent errors and drop in form, Gianluigi Donnarumma will remain the first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester City this season. It would take something spectacular for that to change this season. However, looking further ahead there are questions that surround Donnarumma’s long-term fit at City. With Enzo Maresca preferring his team to build up from the back, you do sense at some point that City will be in the market for a keeper who is proficient in the build up from the back and can make the saves required when necessary. Manchester City do seem to have that keeper on their books in Pierce Charles. Charles is showing enough out on loan at QPR to suggest that he could become Manchester City’s first-choice keeper.
Pierce Charles has impressed at QPR so far this season as his best attributes do seem suited to playing in an Enzo Maresca side.
Pierce Charles has firmly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for QPR. He began the season strongly and put in an impressive stretch of performances for both QPR and Northern Ireland. Based off of Pierce Charles’ displays throughout the beginning of the 2026-27 season he has the potential to become a very good goalkeeper. Although, of late, Charles’ form has tapered off, as of yet that isn’t a major cause for concern but it is worth keeping an eye on.
With his feet, Pierce Charles is exceptional. He possesses a range of passing that would be ideally suited to playing in midfield. The Northern Ireland international is composed under pressure when faced with an opponent’s press. He can pick out the right short pass to play through a press. Charles also has the ability to play a quality long ball and these attributes do seem suited to one day playing in goal for Manchester City.
Pierce Charles is also a quality shot-stopper. He has shown that at QPR and during his time at Sheffield Wednesday. You do sense that Charles is serving the right apprenticeship in the Championship to further grow this side of his game. There is one knock on Charles and that is his size. The young goalkeeper only stands at 186 centimetres tall. He is on the shorter side for a goalkeeper. But the fact that he can survive, and at times thrive, in the Championship illustrates that his size isn’t a major issue.
It will continue to be worth tracking Charles’ performances to see if he keeps coming on as a keeper.
So far this season, Pierce Charles has made fourteen appearances for QPR. He has kept three clean sheets and conceded seventeen goals. Charles does not play for a team that dominates games. QPR are eleventh in the Championship table and do not have the majority of matches their own way. In a way, this is the ideal setting for Charles to grow as a goalkeeper. He has the attributes to become a very good goalkeeper. His performances are worth keeping a close eye on to see if he continues to progress.
Looking further ahead, Pierce Charles does have the makings of a Manchester City goalkeeper. He has the ideal set of attributes to rise to that level. The Gianluigi Donnarumma situation is one to track throughout this season. If the Italian keeper doesn’t raise his game, there will be questions that linger surrounding his fit and future at City. If that is what transpires, City may well be in the market for a new number-one keeper in time. Perhaps Pierce Charles may be the keeper to step up if he continues on his current trajectory.
