Manchester United currently have no plans to sack Michael Carrick, despite their worst start to a league season in 40 years.

The Red Devils are currently 13th in the Premier League table after a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening, with Dominic Solanke netting a last-gasp equaliser for Roberto De Zerbi’s side, who were down to 10 men after a Rodrigo Bentancur red card.

With just six points from their first six league matches of the campaign, it represents Man Utd’s worst start to a season since 1986/87, despite a relatively kind opening set of fixtures.

The 13-time Premier League champions face Chelsea, Aston Villa and Liverpool within their next five English top flight matches, while they play rivals Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday in between trips away to Atletico Madrid and Como in the Champions League.

Carrick, who was appointed on a permanent basis this summer, has been heavily linked with the sack as a result of Man Utd’s underwhelming start to the campaign and it’s reported that ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is eager to join the Red Devils if they opt to make a managerial change.

However, TEAMtalk claim that Man Utd currently have no plans to sack Carrick, and his job isn’t yet under threat, despite just one win in their first six matches of the new Premier League season.

Michael Carrick urged to make midfield change

While Carrick’s job is safe for now, Man Utd legend Gary Neville has urged the Red Devils boss to make a drastic change in midfield following the difficulties of Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo.

“The team is] not running enough, they're not showing enough tenacity, determination and fighting spirit. The boos tell you they are really despondent with what they are watching,” Neville said on The Gary Neville Podcast.

“Tielemans and Mainoo, I think we've seen enough of it now. Not calling time on it, that's probably too drastic. But I've seen enough of it to think: ‘That's not dynamic enough to play at this football club in the Premier League.’

“They're both good players, by the way. But sometimes they don't knit together or suit together, when [Carlos] Baleba came on that looked like a lot more energy. But the rest of them will have to get a grip.”

Man Utd spent just shy of €175 million on Tielemans, Baleba and Andrey Santos over the summer, following the departure of Casemiro on a Bosman deal, but they are yet to reap the rewards of their significant midfield investment, and they could feasibly be tempted to dip back into the market in January if their form doesn’t improve.
