Manchester United have emerged as frontrunners to sign out-of-contract centre-back Sergio Ramos, according to Spanish publication Cadena Ser.

Ramos is a free agent having recently left Mexican side Monterrey after less than a year with the Liga MX side.

And a return to Europe has been mooted with the 39-year-old keen to continue his career on the continent.

Italian giants AC Milan are a rumoured destination for Ramos, but a Premier League switch could yet be on the cards.

Ramos to make Old Trafford move?

United have reportedly made an offer to sign Ramos as Ruben Amorim looks to add some experience to the defence.

While central midfield is a priority position for United, the Premier League giants are reportedly considering offering the former Real Madrid centre-back a short-term deal.

United missed out on European action this season following their low Premier League finish, combined with defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final back in May.

Amorim would welcome a defender of Ramos' standing as United continue to push for a top-four spot, and are currently just one point behind fourth-placed Crystal Palace following their 4-1 win at Wolves on Monday.

Ramos reveals he almost joined United

Ramos, meanwhile, has previously revealed that he came close to a move to Old Trafford back in 2015.

Speaking with The Mirror in 2023, the former Spain international admitted: “I stayed where I should have stayed, Real Madrid, but I was indeed close to playing for United.

“It was not to be, but I do keep that admiration for the club, to the Premier League and the players, because the rhythm of play, the pace is different, and it's a league we can all learn a great deal from, all of us.”

United are next in action on Monday night when they welcome Bournemouth to Old Trafford as they look to extend their unbeaten run to four matches, and make it three wins from their last four in the process.
