Manchester United are reportedly stepping up their efforts to sign Rennes defender Mahamadou Nagida as they look to strengthen their left-back options ahead of the January transfer window.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Red Devils have been particularly impressed by the Cameroon international following several scouting missions, with the 21-year-old now emerging as a potential defensive addition for Michael Carrick’s side.

United have struggled to find a reliable solution at left-back, with Diogo Dalot deputising in recent matches. Bringing in a natural left-back could therefore prove to be an important step towards improving their defensive options.

Mahamadou Nagida attracts Manchester United interest

Nagida has shown considerable promise since joining Rennes in 2023, after developing at the Ecole de Football Brasseries du Cameroun academy.

The young defender has the athleticism, pace, and attacking qualities to thrive in modern football. His defensive work rate and ability to contribute going forward could make him a useful addition to United’s squad.

The Premier League giants have reportedly watched him several times over the past six weeks, including during Rennes’ Europa League fixtures against Juventus and Olympiacos. The feedback from those assignments has been encouraging.

However, Nagida is not the only player under consideration, with Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, RB Leipzig’s David Raum, Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys and Bournemouth’s Adrian Truffert also attracting attention.

Manchester United planning major investment at left-back

United’s interest in the Rennes youngster comes as Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell look to reshape the defensive department.

The club could recruit two left-backs over the next two transfer windows, particularly as Luke Shaw’s long-term future remains a consideration.

Nagida recently extended his contract with Rennes until 2029, meaning United could struggle to negotiate a deal if they decide to pursue his signature.

Nevertheless, his impressive development and the positive reports from United’s scouts make him an exciting prospect. A move to Old Trafford could give the youngster the chance to establish himself in the Premier League.
