Man Utd scout 18-year-old and the verdict is clear: He’ll be a big star
Manchester United are in the market for defensive reinforcements and they may just have found their next star in the form of Twente defender Ruud Nijstad.
The Red Devils have been given a glowing assessment of the 18-year-old sensation, with everything pointing to the teenager becoming a major star at Old Trafford.
But United face major competition: Manchester City, Brentford, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Everton and Sunderland are also interested in Nijstad.
Man Utd’s interest in Nijstad was revealed by TeamTalk, which claims that the centre-back’s 6ft5in frame and left-footed profile have made him ‘an intriguing’ prospect for clubs in the Premier League.
Twente expect interest in the player to increase into 2027, though they have no interest in selling the teenager during the January transfer window.
One familiar figure who is set to have a major say in Nijstad’s future is former Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag, who is now technical director at the Eredivisie side. It’s uncertain, however, whether this will be a help or a hindrance to the Old Trafford side.
What is clear, however, is that Nijstad is a player who could have a major impact at the Old Trafford club, which has shifted their transfer policy in recent seasons to focus on signing young stars.
United have been fearless in doing this in their defence, with Ayden Heaven and Lenny Yoro examples of their willingness to put their faith in up-and-coming talent. Nijstad, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €12.1 million, could be next.
Nijstad could become a future Man Utd star
The Dutchman has the potential to become a key player at Manchester United, according to SciSports. The data analytics firm believe that he has a potential SciSkill of 113.1, which is calculated using in-game data points.
This is higher than any other centre-back currently at the club and trails only Bryan Mbeumo (117.0) overall. Only Yoro has a higher potential than Nijstad among United’s centre-backs, who is more highly rated than Heaven.
All this is very promising for the Red Devils, and the view from Dutch football expert Willem Leigraf mirrors this.
He told FootballTransfers: “Ruud Nijstad has developed himself into a key player already for FC Twente in the Eredivisie and Conference League, despite his young age. Nijstad made his debut last season and became a regular starter within weeks, ending the year with a total of 2,130 minutes played in 28 games.
“His development already caught the attention of PSV last summer, and Nijstad was also linked with FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.
“The talented defender chose a contract extension at FC Twente, where technical director Erik ten Hag convinced him to stay. That has paid off - and he is still a starter there this season, where he excels with his skills in possession through passing and his capability to keep the ball, but also with interventions and interceptions.”
The verdict is therefore clear: Nijstad would make an excellent signing for Man Utd’s future.
