Man Utd on alert as EPL club ‘forced’ to sell 62-goal star at a discount in January
Manchester United have reportedly been presented with a golden opportunity to sign their longtime target Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The Frenchman has been on Jason Wilcox’s watchlist at least since his memorable 2024/25 campaign, when he led Crystal Palace’s charge towards FA Cup glory.
In the end, the Red Devils opted to sign the younger Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig on a deal worth £72 million.
Man Utd directors ready to reinforce the attack in January
While United do not necessarily regret recruiting Sesko, who had a decent first campaign in England, his lengthy absence has been harming the team’s chances this season, especially amid the lack of a natural replacement.
In August, the 23-year-old made his return from a serious shin injury, only to suffer a fresh setback a few weeks later. Experts suggest Sesko could remain on the sidelines for a while.
According to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Man Utd’s hierarchy realise they should have done more on the market in the summer to strengthen the attack. Therefore, Wilcox and Co. are ready to pounce on any inviting opportunities in January.
| Mateta’s Career Stats | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Crystal Palace | 204 | 62 | 14 |
| Mainz | 71 | 27 | 5 |
| Le Havre | 38 | 20 | 0 |
| Chateauroux | 27 | 16 | 3 |
| Lyon | 3 | 0 | 0 |
The source reveals that Mateta could be the ideal solution, as Palace could be ‘forced’ to place him on the market.
The 29-year-old’s contract will expire in June, and he has no desire to pen an extension. Therefore, the Eagles would be ready to cash in on the big striker in January, albeit at a discount.
Does signing Mateta make sense for Man United?
Mateta has been plying his trade at Selhurst Park since 2021, so it’s past time for him to embark on a new career chapter.
Palace have already moved on by signing Jørgen Strand Larsen. They tried to sell the Frenchman last January, but AC Milan pulled out after a failed medical on deadline day.
This season, the bomber missed the first two months due to a hamstring injury, but he made his return to action in the 0-5 defeat to Brighton on Sunday.
In Mateta, Man Utd would have an EPL-proven centre-forward with international experience. His big frame and ability to bring teammates into the play render him an ideal alternative for Sesko in Michael Carrick’s system.
However, INEOS wouldn’t want to add another injury-riddled striker to their ranks. Hence, the directors must make sure he has overcome all of the physical issues that hampered his momentum in recent campaigns before bringing him to Old Trafford.
