Manchester United are considering going after Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly, amid their attempts to sign fellow left-back Lewis Hall, reports The Independent.
United have been known to want a left-back this summer. Their midfield pursuits have taken priority, but with two out of their desired three signings in the centre of the park complete, some attention is being given to the left side of defence.
Newcastle's Hall is the main target, but should the Red Devils be unable to secure the services of the English defender, there are other targets in sight.
Arsenal's Lewis-Skelly is a potential, amid a suggestion United could pick up their long-standing interest in the Premier League champion, aiming to see if the Gunners would do business for him.
While last season, the left-back was a potential departure from the Emirates, he picked his form back up and became a firm fixture in the final weeks of the season.
But that saw him playing in the midfield, and the pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes, which Arsenal seem to be making real progress on, would throw Lewis-Skelly's future into the air once again.
The left-back is not a player Arsenal actively want to sell, but with the potential of his minutes dropping once again, there's a chance he could look for the exit if it becomes clear he'll be given fewer opportunities.
Arteta was happy with Lewis-Skelly
Once he returned to the fold with some exceptional performances at the back end of last season, Lewis-Skelly was praised by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
The Spaniard said: “He fully deserves it. I’ve been tough on him. He had a spectacular season last year when he jumped into the first team.
“He had some difficult moments after that, but he stayed very humble, very focused, very aligned with what we wanted to do, and I knew he was ready.
“He’s been showing in training every day the opportunities that he had to play. He’s done it and today he really stepped up and I thought he had an incredible performance.
“Because probably I don’t have a clue and maybe I should have done it [played him in midfield] earlier, I don’t know! But I have to do things when I believe that the player is ready, the team is ready and the opponent is the right one to play with him in that position.
“We’ve done it today, it’s the first time. It was a big risk because I knew what was going to happen, if he wasn’t this great, we would have lost the game. ‘How do you play a kid at this age, in this scenario, in a position that he hasn’t played all season?’
“I knew that but I had the feeling that it was the right game for him.”
Whether Arteta has the same feelings on Lewis-Skelly if Guimaraes is to join from Newcastle remains to be seen.
