Manchester United are reportedly among several top European clubs tracking Club Brugge bomber Nicolo Tresoldi.

Since the start of the season, the striker’s role has been giving Michael Carrick a major headache.

Last season, Benjamin Sesko was the main choice upfront, but he seemed to be out of sorts following his return from a long-term shin injury, and it later turned out he could require another lengthy period on the sidelines.

In the absence of Sesko, Carrick has resorted to Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, deploying the two wide attackers in a more central role, but neither has been particularly clinical this season.

In the meantime, Joshua Zirkzee has yet to start a match, as he remains an afterthought in the manager’s plans.

The Dutchman was heavily expected to leave last summer, and reports continue to link him with a January exit.

According to Calciomercato, Zirkzee’s departure could be key to Man Utd’s Tresoldi pursuit. The Italian source identifies the Red Devils as one of the main suitors in the race for the free-scoring 22-year-old, alongside AC Milan and Roma.

The centre-forward has been a menacing force upfront for Club Brugge. On Tuesday, he guided the Belgian champions to a memorable 4-3 victory over Inter Milan at San Siro by netting a hat-trick. The young bomber is a self-proclaimed Milan fan, thus adding insult to Inter’s injury.

Last summer, Brugge were reportedly willing to entertain offers worth €40 million. But as the source explains, Tresoldi’s value has soared after a stellar start to the campaign, so his valuation may have reached €63 million (£53m).

As his name suggests, Tresoldi was born in Cagliari to an Italian father, while his mother hails from Argentina.

The family moved to Germany in 2017, so he developped his game at Hoffenheim’s academy, where one of his former coaches, Stefan Leitl, praised his ‘extraordinary’ ability to finish.

The young striker has also represented Germany across several age groups. He has 29 appearances and 17 goals for the under-21s.

However, Tresoldi has yet to make his senior international debut, as he remains undecided between Italy and Germany.

In the meantime, Jurgen Klopp and Roberto Mancini are both desperately trying to convince him to join their ranks.
