Can Manchester United build on the mid-week momentum and climb away from the Premier League's relegation zone? It is hard to remember any match in football history that has had quite as contrasting moods at half time and then the end as Roma's visit to Old Trafford on Tuesday.

With the Giallorossi two up, the crowd was mutinous but, by the end, with Matheus Cunha's double having turned the game around, it was a scene of jubilation. So, can this be a turning point for Michael Carrick, or merely delaying the inevitable?

Well, back in the Premier League, the Red Devils' tally of seven points after nine matches in the joint-fourth lowest they have ever had at this stage of a campaign. Man United are winless in seven league games, their sole victory coming against Ipswich in August. However, ahead of Sunday's crucial clash, their recent record against Aston Villa should offer cause for encouragement.

With Unai Emery set to stay at Villa Park, despite interest from Sunday's opposition, it is pretty revealing that, across his last four meetings with Man United, he has shaken hands with three different managers, namely Erik ten Hag, Rúben Amorim and Carrick.

Despite this, the Red Devils boast an imperious record against the Villans, in-spite of their recent rise. Since Emery beat Man United in his first game in charge, the Red Devils have won six of eight encounters, losing only once.

The most notably of these, from an Aston Villa perspective, came on the final day of the 2024/25 season. Coming four days after Amorim's team had lost had in the Europa League Final against Tottenham in Bilbao, the visitors were widely expected to claim the victory they needed to secure Champions League qualification.

Instead, after Emi Martínez picked up a calamitous red card, Man United ran out 2-0 winners, condemning Villa to the Europa League, which they would go on to win in İstanbul 12 months later.

More broadly, Aston Villa's record at Old Trafford is horrendous. Since 1983, the Villans have beaten Manchester United away from home only twice in 41 attempts. These victories came in December 2009, Gabby Agbonlahor the only scorer, and September 2021. In the latter, Kortney Hause snatched victory in the 88th minute, but only after Bruno Fernandes sky-rocketed a stoppage time spot-kick miles over Martínez's crossbar and into the Stretford End.

Since then, they have lost all six outings at Old Trafford, as well as 13 of the last 15. The most famous during this period, for Manchester United fans, came on a Monday night in April 2013. A first half Robin van Persie hat-trick, featuring a sublime volley, saw Sir Alex Ferguson's side crowned champions with four games to spare.

Well, Man United are along way off becoming champions again. In fact, by the time this one kicks off on Sunday, they could be bottom of the table. Nevertheless, whatever is going on at both clubs, Man United always seem to beat Aston Villa at Old Trafford, hoping that trend continues.
