Man City edge past Brighton on penalties to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals
Manchester City progressed to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after beating Brighton 5-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
Brighton took the lead after 30 minutes when Malick Yalcouyé finished after being set up by Georginio Rutter.
City responded before half-time through Mateo Kovačić, however, who found the bottom corner from Phil Foden’s pass to make it 1-1.
But Brighton struck again almost immediately after the restart, with Rutter putting Fabian Hürzeler’s side back in front in the 47th minute.
City eventually found another equaliser in the 72nd minute when Rayan Cherki’s free-kick took a deflection off Vitor Reis and found the back of the net.
Neither side could find a winner before the end of normal time, sending the tie to penalties.
City held their nerve in the shootout, converting four of their five spot-kicks to book their place in the last eight, while goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli made two crucial saves to deny Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk.
